Rangehood installation

In addition to adding elegance and charm to kitchens worldwide, range hoods are essential for air quality. A hood of any style is designed to keep the air clean by capturing odours, irritants and grease.

Motorized fans are used to draw in polluted air, either taken outdoors or filtered and recirculated. You and your family may experience eye, nose, and throat irritation if you do not have a range hood. Carbon monoxide poisoning can also be prevented with vent hoods. According to recent studies, using a stove without turning on the range hood causes higher levels of carbon monoxide to build up in the kitchen.

It can also be uncomfortable to cook in a kitchen because cooking produces a lot of heat. Since excess heat and steam are removed, cooks and their families can enjoy a more pleasant cooking environment with range hoods.

In addition, overhead range hoods offer additional lighting to prepare food. Clean-up is also easier with proper lighting, ensuring that all that hard to see grease and grime is removed.

What are the different types of range hood

Ductless Range Hoods: There is no air evacuation from your cooktop area to the outdoors with a ductless range hood. Instead, the air is cleaned through some kind of filter. For ductless hoods to provide additional filtration, charcoal filters are typically used. While these are effective, they are not as efficient as ducted range hoods.

Ducted Range Hoods: The ductwork allows a range hood to exhaust grease and contaminants to the outside. In the case of island hoods, you'll install this ductwork in your ceiling while installing other hood types on your wall. Professionals recommend this method for keeping the air in your kitchen clean since it is the most effective.

Wall Mount Range Hoods: Range hoods mounted on the wall are installed directly over the stove or cooktop. Range hoods are connected to the outside of the house by vertical or horizontal ducts.

Island Range Hoods: An island range hood is specifically designed for use with cooktops on islands. Island rangehoods provide a practical, stylish way to vent your kitchen, similar in design to canopy rangehoods.

Range Hood Inserts: A exhaust fan fits inside a custom hood to provide an exhaust system with a range hood insert.

Under Cabinet Range Hoods: Under-cabinet rangehoods fit beneath your cabinetry so that you can keep the kitchen air clean. The unit will not usually be visible in most cases.

Professional Grade Range Hoods: Heavy materials are used to construct commercial ranges. Range hoods constructed for commercial purposes are therefore more durable than those for residential use. A commercial gas range also generates a lot more cooking power. The ranges are also bigger, so they provide more cooking power.

Do you need an electrician to install a range hood?

It may appear that installing a range hood is relatively easy, but there are several things to consider. Installing large vent range hoods with extractors and ducting sometimes requires additional cabinetry or carpentry work.

There is a minimum distance required under Australian standards between the range hood and the cooktop as well. The distance varies with the type of cooktop. With your new range hood, you should also include decent light and grease collectors that can be removed.

Your cooktop's number of burners or heat plates will determine what appliance you should use for your cooking needs. It also depends on how much you cook, what type of food you prepare, and how often you cook. With all of those factors in play, having your range hood installed professionally is always recommended for the best (and safest) result.

Do rangehoods have to be vented outside?

No, ductless range hoods recirculate the air back into the kitchen. However, to get the best results, purchase a ducted range hood. It will altogether remove the exhaust from your home rather than relocate it.

Is a range hood required by code in Australia?

In a Class 1 building, range hoods are not specifically mandated by the Building Code of Australia (BCA). However, following the BCA, any occupied room must provide natural ventilation. This creates a grey area in home kitchens, as industry standards require ventilation, but range hoods aren't explicitly required.

While they are not compulsory, they are the most effective way to ventilate kitchens and remove pollutants like smoke and carbon monoxide from the air, so they should be an integral part of any cooktop or oven.

How much does it cost to get a rangehood installed?

Installing a fixed rangehood is likely to cost around $150. Depending on the amount of cabinetry needed, slide-out units will cost between $160 and $245. An overhead canopy will cost an average of $300, with additional charges for electrical wiring and ducting.
